These Boots are the Best

Making a list like this is not easy as we live in a consumer driven society. Which means that most people are constantly upgrading things before it’s even necessary? Can you remember all the things you’ve owned for 10 years? This my very own experiment to really test how long things can last and instead of just throwing things out because a shiny new product is glimmering from the retail store display. All the things I’ve owned for 10 years is a real feat, because I’m breaking records and have no desire to make any replacements unless its necessary.

Stuffitis is a real disease going around since before the 1970s, no really I was not even born yet, but I read history books. Garages all over America have been filled with all the extra stuffities, including 2 retro refrigerators because folks buy new ones instead of replacing a little motor.

I recently saw a show how this one guy is restoring 1960s appliances from his work shop, it’s called American Restoration. Now I know if he can fix it today, it could have been fixed back then as well. All I’m saying is replace things only when really necessary, and find used alternatives to save you some dollars. (Stuffitis Avoided)

All the things I’ve Owned for 10 years:

A 1999 Toyota Camry – Sold but wife had it for 6 years and I drove it for 5 years. (11 Years total)

Reliable Microwave – Over ten years and still going strong.

Several Invicta Men’s 8926OB “Pro Diver” Stainless Steel Automatic Watch with Link Bracelet

A great 100% Wool Two piece Suit – I have several suits but this one lasted a decade.

A Samsung Flip Phone – Granted I have a smart phone already, but if I wanted to I can connect this flip phone.

A Pair of Nike Men’s Air Pegasus 83 Anthracite/Wolf Grey/Cool Grey Running Shoe 12 Men US
– Used only for 5K and 5 mile races throughout the years, they lasted due to minimal use. (Only 3-4 races per year)

My favorite Cup – I have a coca cola branded cup that I use for drinks

My Victorinox Swiss Classic 6-Piece Steak Knife Set, 4-1/2-Inch Serrated Blades with Round Tip(Do you know how good steak tastes especially when you can cut the right size piece with a good reliable knife?)

Levis and Guess Jeans – Wow I can’t believe it but they lasted a decade.

Timberland Boots -3 of them only used during winter snow storms.

Nike Jordan’s only used rarely. (Selling most of them on occasion)

My favorite book Skipping Christmas by John Grisham. (Doubleday,2001) [Hardcover]

All of my favorite Movie Dvds

My Vanguard Funds (Great Funds)

A Few Reliable Products I’ve owned under 10 years:

My LG Smart Tv – 8 Years and still going strong

The Laptop I am writing this post on – 4 Years

The Samsung 3 Smart phone – 2.5 years (No Desire to Upgrade)

I am only recommending these products because I know how reliable they are, and if owned for over 10 years it is well worth the price. Every year you own said products, it will help you reduce the overall price to own. For example the Nike sneakers were originally priced at $75 dollars, if you divide by ten years, I ended paying only, 7.50 per year cost to own. If you get in the habit to replace products only on rare occasions, you will save money.

In conclusion and on a side note, I find vintage looking things more appealing. If it is clean looking and functional I prefer using those older looking products compared to ultra-modern things. In a few more years all of the things mentioned above will be considered almost vintage.

For example to name a few things vintage that I like cars, appliances, watches, and homes. There is something that draws me to vintage things. What about you do you prefer new or vintage?

Now its your turn to divulge what things you’ve owned for a cool decade?

Comment on all the things I’ve owned for 10 years?

  1. Does my house count? 🙂 Just broke out a concert T-shirt from 2005 of my favorite band U2. I certainly have other clothes that I've had just as long. I know we have some housewares plates, utensils that are easily 10 years plus.

  2. I take pride in wearing clothes that are at least 10 years old, it gives me pride that I haven't gained very much weight and that I can make things last for repeated use. Shorts, Jeans, Jackets, and Shirts are the usual winners in this category.

  3. Only one thing: my snowboard. The first snowboard I bought literally snapped in half (I hit a couple of rocks), but my second one has lasted me 11 years. I don't use it anymore – maybe 50 years down the line it'll be an antique.
