This list is a very good list, but I would assume that they are not including the diesel engines options. The TDI Jetta and Golf get about 40+ miles per gallon and would be somewhere in the mix here. The list was featured in CNNMoney.com and the writer gave a brief opinionated summary of each car. http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2011/autos/1111/gallery.most_fuel_efficient_since_1984/index.html
Just to give you all insight as to what I think about this list:
-I would love to own a 50+ mile per gallon car one day
-I would only consider from the list buying the Prius, Civic, or the Lexus
-If it’s a two door it’s not for me
-Anything less than 4 cylinders is considered slow
Granted that some of the cars are not in existence anymore, I think with some research anyone can find a used car from this list. You might have to travel to Kansas or Oklahoma to find the Chevy sprint, but it can be done. Since we are on the subject of fuel economy and cars, please check out a great documentary called, “Who killed the electric car?” It is based on political pressure to remove electric cars from being mass produced back in the 90’s. I think we all can use this list to be more informed as to where the car manufacturers are headed with fuel economy, given the increased pressure of the smart consumer. For me I will consider and use fuel economy as a deciding factor with my future car purchase. Whatever car that may be. Hopefully it’s the one that gets 50+ miles per gallon. By 2025 all car companies must abide by a 50 MPG rating, but who will wait till then to get a car. 1. ” Who killed the electric car” is an amazing documentary that shows the power of politics, oil industries and car manufactures. We could have been more green, less dependent on foreign supplies and one less payment to worry about by now; if the concept would of not been destroyed. Only in America can we come up with an amazing idea decide its not in big money best interest and years later impose it and recreate the lets go green idea once again. Gotta love it.

  2. there is new technology with batteries coming soon that will increase the range of EV and hybrids. The Fisker Karma and the Tesla sedan are two vehicles that will benefit from that tech. Im surprised they are not on the list.

  3. Yes I have heard of these cars and they will be on the streets soon, but I think the cars that were listed here are for the highest rated MPG gasoline version engines not battery operated cars. Thanks for the comment bro!

  4. i would like to get a car like this but to keep it real w/ you….this cars are to small and have no style…..i think that's one of the reason people haven't job for the opportunity to buy one and also wont this run up Ur electric bill up the roof….i mean think about it its a car Ur Charging

  5. @anonymous- Yes your right most of these cars are smaller and do not appeal to everyone, the new prius is a bit more stylish than the rest, but still very small. So it all depends what you need if you want a car with the best fuel economy then you will find it here, if you want some style and speed you can look at the Lexus CT200h.

  6. @anonymous- In regards to plugging in a car it's actually cheaper to drive than getting gas and the home bill wont be as much as your gas bill monthly. Plus from the list the only plug in models are the volt and the new prius plug in.
